Classics Revisited #2: The Purple Tape

This will bring back great memories for those old enough to remember, and for the younger fans, something to think about as they already heard about this.
The Purple Tape aka Only Built 4 Cuban Linx is a tasty morsal of golden age rap memorabilia, Why were the tapes Purple? how valuable and reare is it?
Apparently on 10,000 of these Tapes were ever made. I have seen a sealed one go on eBay for about $5k in 2010.

Personal research suggest that the first purple polyphonic product was The Pixies first demo, which was released in 1987. It was nicknamed The Purple Tape by Pixie fans because it was (surprise, surprise) purple. However, there is no real proof that this tape was actually tinted purple. Meaning that a more apporpriate title might have been “the clear tape with the purple case”.

Next came Lisa Loeb’s demo (what’s up with demos and the color purple?) in 1991. Which for all you LL fans (no Todd Smith aka LL Cool J), has been remastered and re-released sometime in 2008. There is also no concrete proof that this cassette were coloured purple be it previously or re-release.  Oh yeah, Lisa Loeb’s current release is called the Purple Tape CD (wack).

This all leads to the release of Only Built for Cuban Linx in 1995 (AKA the Only Real Purple Tape). Luckily record companies were still making tapes, and even luckilier (is that a word?) Raekwon requested that his tape be purple. Good call Rae…

So why did Rae call it the purple tape?
Lets first look at the title of the album, according to Wikipedia 'The album's title serves as "a warning of its musical potency to those not prepared for the uncut raw contained within." Although the original intended title was "Only Built 4 Cuban Linx Niggaz", this idea was eventually dismissed in favor of a more market-friendly one. Ghostface Killah later specified "We already had the title. The chain we used to rock back in the days was Cuban links. So Rae came up with the theory, like a Cuban link is one of the roughest chains to break. Only Built 4 Cuban Linx... Real niggas, strong niggas."

The purple Tape in reference to the album was because the original cassette's plastic was entirely purple; Raekwon marked the tape distinctively as a reference to drug dealers' method of tagging their product, to distinguish it from that of others'. "I wanted to portray an image that if I was selling crack or dimes in the street, you would recognize these dimes from other niggas' dimes.
This was confirmed on an interview Rae did with AllHiphop.com

"AllHipHop.com: Where’d you get the idea to come out with [Only Built 4 Cuban Linx as] a purple tape? I thought it was a defect when I got mine.?

Raekwon: Only because being that we from the block, we was finagling in certain situations where the things that you was dealing with had to be separated from what everybody else was dealing with. I always ran with that as one of my traits in anything I do to separate myself from others. Back when we used to sling and do what we do, we would have certain color caps [to viles]. Certain color caps resembled certain people that were doing s**t different than everybody else. It’s like, “Yo, this is our color. Anybody step on this color, you got an issue at that time.” So I decided with my music, this is my world—this is my thing and I wanna put a color on it just so everybody will know. That’s how the purple tape even came in existence. I think I had wanted a red one at first and then I thought how somebody else had did it already. I made it like that specifically…."

Indeed.. The album from cover art, concept, packaging was all thought through, the music (production, features, lyrics, subject matter etc) was also thought through, this is what makes this album a classic and what makes the Wu-Tang Clan the best collective to ever emerge from Hip-Hop.
The album was loosely composed to play like a film with Raekwon as the "star," fellow Wu-Tang member Ghostface Killah as the "guest-star," and producer RZA as the "director.' It features appearances from every member of the Wu-Tang Clan, and served as an introduction to Cappadonna.  It also features an acclaimed guest appearance from rapper Nas, which marked the first collaboration with a non-affiliated artist on a Wu-Tang related album.

In 2012, Rolling Stone magazine ranked Cuban Linx number 480 on their updated version of The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. Need I say more?

Long Live The Purple Tape!!!

Exhibit Highlights Staten Island Music From Doo-Wop to Wu-Tang

STATEN ISLAND — When most people think of Staten Island musical acts, their mind goes straight to the Wu-Tang Clan or The New York Dolls.
An upcoming exhibit at Snug Harbor Cultural Center, Livingston, hopes to move past the 36 chambers.
"Island Sounds: A 500 Year Music Mashup," will feature artifacts and memorabilia from musicians and artists that were born, lived, worked and performed on Staten Island.
"A lot of people don't know about how many musicians came from here, perform here, and still live here today," said Lynn Kelly, Snug Harbor's president and CEO. "If you grew up here you might know. Now I want the world to know these are things we should be celebrating."
The exhibit will start in next week and run for 18 months. It will have a timeline of the forgotten borough's musical history, beginning in the pre-1500s, with songs from the Lunaape Indians, to the present.
Artists in the exhibit include Vernon Reid, guitarist of metal band Living Color; David Johansen, lead singer of the New York Dolls and of Buster Poindexter fame (who sung that "feeling hot, hot, hot," song played at weddings); the RZA from Wu-Tang Clan; 19th century harpist Maud Morgan; vaudeville performer Laura Burt and Vito Picone, from the doo-wop group The Elegants, among others.
Kelly said this exhibit will help dispel some of the negative ideas people might have about Staten Island and its residents.
"I feel like Staten Island always gets these weird connotations with it," she said. "I know and I want others to know about all the great stuff that's here. This is the culture that should be coming out of the Island."
Vistors can see the boots worn by Johansen during the New York Dolls reunion tour in 2004 and the keyboard that the RZA used on Wu-Tang's landmark album, "Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)."
The exhibit will also commemorate the 120th anniversary of Snug Harbor's music hall, the second oldest music hall in New York City, Kelly said.
"We wanted to do something to really celebrate the significance of this event," she said. "The 'Island Sounds' exhibit was the perfect launch."
"Island Sounds" will go up in the main hall of the Snug Harbor campus on May 11. Kelly said some of the musicians feature in the exhibit will be on hand to celebrate the opening.
The exhibit will also include non-recording artists who helped or made music on the Island. Famous guitar shop, Mandolin Brothers, which has sold, built and repaired guitars for Bob Dylan, Paul McCartney and others, will be featured. Jonathan Larsen, who wrote "Rent" and lived in St. George for several years, and Galt Mac Dermot, composer of the musical "Hair," who has lived on Staten Island for decades, will also have space in the exhibit.
The exhibit will be open Wednesday through Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults, $4 for students and seniors and children under 12 will be admitted free. It will run through to Dec. 12.

The Making of RZA aka Bobby Digital Presents Northstar

As Naratted by ChristBearer (Northstar) For Wu-International

There is a whole album of songs that we and RZA THE GREAT wanted for this album but the execs over at Koch was like no, no, no so we put it out our selves several times :0) and called it Northstar presents West Coast Killa Beez which was first called Underground Sh*t az a lot of fans know Warcloud was all over that album being that at the time he had left Black Knight over creative differences even though they were still cool and working together and he was mainly riding wit us but when Koch said they wanted us to record it in LA we did just that to make a long story short, a lot changed when we went back to re-record the album.

Kinetic, Pachino and Ninth got involved because they knew we needed the support, same wit everybody else from Trife to Freemurder, Mathematics, Suga Bang Bang, Solomon Childs, Krymelife, The Knigths etc all family, Masta Killa and Dirty (ODB RIP) was supposed to get on but due to miscommunication it never happened, Masta Killah even had a verse that I never got to hear for Red Rum.

All and All it was received great on the underground and it even got great write ups in almost every major hip hop mag you can name Vive, The Source, Double XL, etc yet the label and RZA THE GREAT could not see eye to eye and they wanted the album NOW! RZA THE GREAT wanted what he wanted so I must admit that between me and Alan Grumblat over there at Koch we did some gangster yet junky shit when RZA was out of town to get the masters for press cuzz I wanted that album out as bad as them on the East, North, West and Central Long Beach city!!! :0) yet RZA THE GREAT did some gangster shit too and cut the tour short and kept the video money, and changed the title from The RZA presents to Bobby Digital presents thats why you saw the first covers were almost different :0) so there it is.. may it reign for ever and a day Bobby Digital presents according to CHRIST BEARER THE GREAT;0)
