Every Wu-Tang Clan Posse Cut, Ranked

Posse cuts are an interesting sub-genre of hip-hop expression. While the usual dynamic for rap songs is a single rapper and a single producer with maybe one or two “featured” artists, the posse cut integrates varying styles and techniques but must remain fluid and coherent. The individual rappers tailor their own styles over the same beat which often produces intriguing dichotomies between artists. Indeed, some of the most memorable and influential rap songs can be considered posse cuts: “The Symphony,” “Scenario,” “Buddy,” and “Flava In Ya Ear (Remix),” to only name a few.

Raekwon and Ghostface Killah Talk to Complex at NBA All-Star Weekend

One common theme throughout NBA All-Star Weekend is that there are more stars in the crowd than there are on the court. In fact, we're guessing the ratio of celebrities to players is about 50-to-1. And two of the dudes who made an appearance in New Orleans this week were none other than Ghostface Killah and Raekwon, who were nice enough to sit and talk with Complex before putting their taste buds through sheer agony (more on that in like five seconds).

First they talked about how they stay so close over the years, and how they do things at ASW. If you happen to be there it sounds like they're cool with taking pics.

From there they pivoted to talking about how they were set to pair up for a live episode of Hot Ones soon after this interview. Showcasing the two most common pregame approaches to the increasingly spicy wings, Ghostface expressed some worry, and even said, "As long as it's not hot." Good luck with that.

Meanwhile, Raekwon seemed completely unfazed. Though, as we've seen, everybody's got a plan 'til that sauce punches them in the mouth.

Guess we'll have to see how those contrasting attitudes fare when they're put to the test.

Keep your eye out for Hot Ones featuring Ghostface and Raekwon when it drops.

Martin Shkreli Reportedly Trying To Play Unreleased Wu-Tang Album At NYC Event

Martin Shkreli is trying to sell tickets to a lecture next week by billing the event as a listening event.

On Wednesday, Martin Shkreli, the infamous pharmaceutical exec who purchased the Wu-Tang album Once Upon a Time in Shaolin for more than $2 million last year, took to social media to promote an event next week dubbed “An Evening With Martin Shkreli,” which will find him lecturing at NYC’s Webster Hall about politics, investing & healthcare. But what many people are finding interesting is that Martin also described the lecture as a listening event. So could he be planning on playing the album for those in attendance? It appears that way.

According to the listing on Eventbrite, Shkreli was scheduled to play “unreleased music” from his Wu-Tang collection & more. However, shortly after the announcement, Shkreli took to Facebook to announce the event had been canceled due to some threats.

“It's sad that a couple of threats can cancel a 500 person event people wanted to go to..”

Shkreli has already played snippets from the album back in November following Trump's victory, so the idea of him wanting to play the full thing shouldn’t be much of a surprise. Let's just hope it doesn't happen in the manner in which he wishes.

We’ll keep you posted if any more on this story develops.

Joe Young’s ‘Invincible Armour’ May Be The Closest We Get To Another Wu-Tang Album

With Method Man, Raekwon, Masta Killa, Inspectah Deck, and Cappadonna in tow, Germany-raised MC Joe Young has released Invincible Armour, an album produced entirely by Dame Grease. Born in Manhattan, Joe Young (born Tyrone Clay) forged a relationship with some of the Wu-Tang Clan members after signing a deal with Sony BMG in the early 2000s. That resulted in features from Cappadonna and Inspectah Deck on Joe’s 2005 album. Twelve years later, and Joe has added three more of the legendary Staten Island crew’s members to his list of collaborators for his new project, which drops today (February 10).

Seven of Invincible Armour‘s 12 tracks feature one or more members of the Wu, making it a veritable reunion. Although Ghostface Killah and RZA are not involved, there is an undeniable 36 Chambersinfluence throughout the album, both from a production standpoint and conceptual framework. Skits and interludes pepper the LP, and the lyrics are as East Coast gritty as they were in 1993. Thus far, Joe Young has dropped “Crack Babies 2.0” (which features Meth, Rae, Capp, and Deck) and the song’s original version, which only features Method Man as singles. In December, he also dropped a video starring Masta Killa for “Projects.”

20 Years Ago Today, Wu-Tang Clan Bombed Atomically In A Rap Triumph (Video)

It was February 11 that Wu struck with “Triumph.” The five-plus-minute song did not sound like a carry over from 36 Chambers. The sound was enhanced and the look went from the rugged lands of Shaolin to the state of the art green-screens. Still though, the Wu was not about conforming to radio, video, or any Rap peers’ paths to #1 spots. They did it their own way.

RARE Pre-36 Chambers WU-TANG Interview & FREESTYLE On WBAU Radio March 1, 1993

Here's a classic Wildman Steve & DJ Riz show from '93 which features a very early appearance of Wu-Tang members Ghostface, Raekwon, Method Man & U-God (as well as college radio veterans Total Pack which consisted of Ce Style & Kamal B Wise. WBAU used to come on Monday nights on Long Island's Adelphi University's 90.3 frequency. The show aired from 10pm-2am. The show location itself was like a typical night at D&D Studios. Once you were buzzed in and took the elevator to the 3rd floor you would stumble across many aspiring artists. Wildman Steve started on the station in '87 while DJ Riz joined him in '91. The show ran it's course until August 1995 when the frequency was sold to Nassau Community College. Steve's voice would boom through the speakers with a touch of reverb while DJ Riz destroyed the turntables. He remains to this day one of the nicest DJs to ever do radio. Both Steve and Riz's contribution to the show and Hip Hop itself still resonates today.

Hip-Hop Chess Federation Combines Tech And Hip-Hop For Two-Day Seminar In San Francisco

The San Francisco based nonprofit organization Hip-Hop Chess Federation is hosting a two-day event focused on hip-hop and education.

The nonprofit’s “University In Diversity: Hip-Hop Ed, Art and Technology” will feature community dialog with teachers, rappers, artists and other innovators to inspire local youth, who are seeking to gain an edge in those particular fields.

Topics during the week include “The Hamiltonization of Hip-Hop: Is Commerce Killing The Culture?,” “Science and Hip-Hop: Innovating Beyond The Code,” in addition to several youth led panels.

“In chess all pieces have their own movements,”HHCF founder Adisa Banjoko told AllHipHop.com. “Alone they can do very little. However, united they can achieve amazing things. The same is true in education. We are giving parents and educators a media access to one another so both can find the best tools to get their kids college ready. This is just the beginning.”

Other panelists include Zion I, NBC11 technology anchorman Scott Budman, and hip hop producer Dug Infinite.
