Why Wu-Tang Will Release Just One Copy Of Its Secret Album

You've heard of rare records before, but what Wu-Tang Clan is planning for its stealthy double album, The Wu–Once Upon a Time in Shaolin, is unprecedented. The legendary rap group will sell only one copy, encased in an engraved silver and nickel box. It will be very, very expensive.
It's actually a brilliant plan. When explaining the album to Forbes, the RZA spared no hyperbole.

"We're about to put out a piece of art like nobody else has done in the history of [modern] music," the legendary rapper said. "We're making a single-sale collector's item. This is like somebody having the scepter of an Egyptian king."

    1. They figured people were going to pirate it anyways. So, if this is sold, they'll be making a huge profit as opposed to selling it like a normal album.

      Delete
    2. Because they know it won't sell otherwise. ;)

    5. Who cares? TPB will have it about a second after it's inevitably leaked.

      Delete
    6. If an album is released, and nobody hears it, does it make a sound?

      Delete
    7. Pirating music on TPB is the exact reason why they are doing this, you dumb bastard.

      Delete
    8. If they make an album, but rather than let their loyal fans hear it, sell it to one person it proves they care more about money than getting their art out to the masses. Masses who have been fans for decades. I think that's lame.

      Delete
    9. Why = Press Release

      Delete
    10. releasing just one copy is a disgusting and transparent cash grab. zero interest in their fans or in their music making an impact, just a whirlwind of hype followed by a huge paycheck. fuck them and fuck this, no class whatsoever.

      Delete
    11. If you think pirating actually has a big impact on music sales then I don't know what to tell you. Go listen to the RIAA propaganda more I guess.

      Delete
    12. Wu Tang, doesn't have, and never has, had, anything to offer. The man who buys this will not hold a King's scepter, he will hold Satan's Trident itself.

      Delete
    13. you mad, jsilverman. no one told you to follow that hogwash religion that was taken from another.

    14. Do any of you trolls think they will get more for one copy than millions? "Cash grab" or "care more about the money" are words of the HATERS. Shut the fuck up!

      Delete
    15. OH SHIT MUSIC IS BEING PIRATED. The unlucky bands will have to get last year's private jet. We can't put up with this travesty. BUY YOUR MUSIC YOU FUCKERS. Just because you like your music, doesn't make the band members good people.

      Delete
    16. If it starts to get pirated, they'll know EXACTLY who to sue for even more money! Genius!

      Delete
    17. Not going to read every comment here... but someone said pirating music on TPB is why they're doing this... then went on to call someone a dumb bastard, so let me respond to that. Music artists don't make all that much from album sales. This is why most rappers release mixtapes left and right. That money goes mostly to the label and the artists see a very small percentage of those dollars (sure it's a little different if you own your own label, but that's beside the point here). What they REALLY make money on is touring, performing their music on stage. You'll notice a lot of artists give two shits about and album leaking. Alssssooo I figured this was common sense but I saw someone say some ignorant shit somewhere that I feel the unnecessary need to address.. the person that gets this will not be the ONLY person to "have" the album... it's just going to be the only official physical copy. One last thing... 'they' will not make more from this one copy than they would if they produced however many thousands of hard copies. No way in hell... this is about making a statement.

      Delete
    18. Why? Because, Wu-Tang Clan ain't nuthin' to fuck with!

      Delete
    19. you idiots realize they will end up releasing the music on itunes right? the one physical album is like a painting/artwork idea. yeah it will be REALLY expensive but then they will make money off itunes.

      Delete
    20. One physical copy. How many available on I-tunes? Marketing strategy 101, kids. Hype leads to sales. Good for Wu-Tang if it brings more people to their concerts. Bad for the leeches that suck the profits away from the artists. At least some artists are finding ways to promote themselves in the "new" digital age that doesn't rely on them selling away 2/3 of their rights for promotion.

      Delete
    21. Did you even read the article? The album won't be released on iTunes, or anywhere else for that matter. The only way it will be available to anyone else is if the person who buys it uploads it, or it changes hands.

      Delete
    22. Or if the people at the recording label decide to release it for teh monies. Because you know they will. You dont fund an entire album with multiple recording sessions and then only sell it to one person.

      Delete
    23. I wouldn't even pirate their worthless music the shit is a joke straight up waste of time fuck wu tang and anyone who likes them. you know ur gay if u like wu tang

  13. There will be one physical copy that they sell, but there will be the mp3s on iTunes. CDs haven't really sold in 15 years, so it's an interesting marketing tactic. Why waste even the small amount of money printing CDs that won't sell anyways?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. 15 years? Are you an idiot? Maybe 3-4 years ago they started to decline, but not 15 fuckin' years ago...

      Delete
    2. The iPod was released 13 years ago, and there were several MP3 players which predated that.

I would agree that saying they "haven't sold" since 2000 is a bit much, but saying they only "started to decline" 3-4 years ago is equally absurd. 15 years ago is probably about right for the beginning of the end.

      Delete
    3. your all wrong, Cd's are still the choice in music for hundreds of countries. Japan alone accounts for almost 50 % of all cd sales world wide and they are far more tech advanced than most. its preference that meets demand not mp3 players.

      Delete
    4. Back in 2002, Borders opened a branch in my city (albeit a small one) and I helped open it, and worked there through college and grad school. When we opened the store in 02', we had at least 8 long displays for CDs (I'd guess they were around 20 feet in length - double-sided). By the time I left in 2007, they had cut it to 4 displays for CDs and were relying on "special ordering" CDs if it wasn't in store (but I won't get into all of why/how they sank their own ship by pulling things like this). So yea, the demand had greatly been reduced at my store by 07' because more and more people were consuming digital music here. I pretty much stopped buying CDs unless they were special, in 2001 because there were various ways of getting digital albums. But Anon above me is correct, CDs are still hugely popular in other parts of the world, Asia especially still loves its CDs. So mileage may vary.

      Delete
    5. If there were going to be MP3's on iTunes, why would they go through the trouble of touring museums with the album, making you pay for a listening of it, and checking you for recording devices before you even listen to it. Sorry buddy. Physical album will be it unless it is uploaded by the buyer. Definitely won't be on iTunes... Unless Apple buys it...

    1. I find it comical that you will call individuals "stupid fucking idiots". Considering the very poor use of grammar. Did you really type "like" out of context as if you were speaking with poor grammar as well? Wu-Tang are actually very respected around the world by many people including their own peers in the music industry for their high level of song writing, lyrics, producing, and live shows. For anyone to message on this bored of how horrible or worthless their music is, should try to understand music first. Have you written, produced, and toured for years on end to sell records as an artist known all over the world? How many of you have written, produced, played live shows, and sold your albums at all? Judge not!

      Delete
    2. "Have you written, produced, and toured for years on end to sell records as an artist known all over the world? How many of you have written, produced, played live shows, and sold your albums at all? Judge not!" Implies that you can only critique music if you have made some yourself. (stupid) "Considering the very poor use of grammar. Did you really type "like" out of context as if you were speaking with poor grammar as well?" If you had bothered to read, his statement was in quotations which means it was someone elses words. In this case the words of one of the "Legendary Rappers" (stupid +1) At least read the article before you type out your own brand of stupidity.

      Delete
    3. I understand you never stated that you use better grammar or spelling but it would be "board" not "bored". And to all the haters, as Staind said "You're nothing but a wanna be!" I have never heard a single Wu-Tang Clan song in my life, I know about them and who they are, and I still think this is awesome and something that they should be respected for because they are the first (that I know of) to ever do this. All of you chill out and just give them props.

    4. Guys: I don't have to be a 5 star chef to tell you a meal sucks. I don't have to be a singer to tell you someone can't sing. Most (if admittedly not all) people can taste when food isn't prepared correctly, or when a singer is off pitch. In much the same way, I don't have to be a musician (although I am) to tell you when music is stupid. The "Wu Tang Clan" writes music about pointless bullshit. For a musician, the music you write isn't just what your life is about, the music is your life. SO by extension, if your music is about pointless bullshit like hoes, parties, drugs, cars, money, etc, and your music is your life, guess what that makes your life about?
Solving the deeper mysteries of the universe and understanding how beautiful we are?
      Probably fucking not.

  43. Nothing they make will ever top Enter the 36 Chambers. Sorry Wu-Tang, the 90s are over, we're too old for this shit now.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Alright lets do the math... if they make only one album that alone makes it a rear collectible that will also appreciate in value over the years. let make tell you why, the more you create something that's not original (BOOTLEGS/COPIES from something that is (ORIGINAL ALBUM) it makes the original more valuable. Basically it's like having a painting from Picasso but over the years many have created prints of that ORIGINAL and thus made the original more valuable and sought after. If they were to hold on to that one album for a good while the bootleg or copies hit the street or sold the original now to a investor or company they formed like a holding group not only could they write off purchasing their own shit as a investment they turn one album into profit without even putting too much effort.

Whoever said that by selling 1 album would make them more money than selling millions of albums is an idiot. This would have to sell for millions of $$ and that's not going to happen....UNLESS a music label buys it and then distributes it.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Their is only one copy......

    ReplyDelete
  63. Not sure if someone said this, I cant read all these comments.... but, it says they are selling one physical copy of the album. SO that will sell for a lot of money Im sure, but it doesnt say they wont sell it via digital sources. The physical products are dwindling anyways, who buys CD's these days? No one I know. They sell this, make a ton of cash on it to kick start the financing of the album, and then make money the new old fashioned way; $1 at a time.

    ReplyDelete
  64. All you cunts saying this is a money scheme to counteract piracy are dumber than dirt. 69. For millenia (literally), artists have made and sold singular pieces of work. The value of the work is not only based on the quality of the artist, but also on having that one piece of art. That's why in today's society you can buy a $10,000,000 authentic piece of art or a $20 print fake. I don't doubt that this album will make it out to the public one way or another, but their idea of creating a piece of art out of an album is neither new nor selfish. I'm not sure I agree that it's "like holding an Egyptian king's scepter," but I can see that by doing this they are effectively calling themselves artists. I don't know that their music is anything incredibly special, but props to them for making that bold statement.

How could you if YOU'RE NOT MAKING ANY MONEY??!!! sooooo why do people expect us Artists to always just focus on "the love of te craft" n treat us like we're wrong for wanting to make lots n lots of money like anybody else wants to make from their job? People who sit here and throw that crap at us will be THE FIRST ONES to take what we give them for free and go try to make a million dollars off of it somehow. So why is it so wrong for us to want to make that same amount of cash for our hard work? that's BS
