Shop Talk with Raekwon

For this episode of Shop Talk, Mass Appeal linked with Raekwon the Chef at Carmine Street Comics.

"I'm always gonna take time to check out cartoons and look at comic books," said Raekwon shortly after strolling into Carmine Street Comics in NYC's West Village. "In this business you have to stay young."

For the cover of Rae's seventh solo album The Wild the iconic Wu-Tang MC enlisted former Shaolin resident Dan Lish to create a comics-inspired post-apocalyptic urban wasteland. Although Meth is the Wu's biggest comic book head, Rae tapped into the graphic arts to portray his vision of NYC. "I'm almost the king of the jungle... I want the people to be animals... I feel like New York City has no identity when it comes to knowing what we created in the music business. I need New York to look twisted."

"People look at Wu-Tang as superheroes," Rae says in our latest edition of Shop Talk. "When you see Raekwon the Chef, you're thinkin' a guy with the blades, that's nice with the blades on some karate shit. Tony Starks, Ironman, he like to hold them things, too. That iron! [Laughs]" Peep the video up top.

Redman Says Filming For ‘How High 2’ Could Begin In 2018 (VIDEO)

It’s been 16 years since Redman and Method Man teamed up for the stoner film How High.

Some fans of the movie have been hoping a How High sequel would eventually hit theaters.

In a recent interview with The Source, Red spoke about the potential of another flick with Meth arriving in the near future.

“Me and Meth, were working on a How High 2. It’s being written. Hopefully, by the end of the year, the script will be done and we can start shooting next year,” revealed Redman.

The New Jersey-raised wordsmith then addressed his longtime creative partner directly.

“Yo Meth, me and you are going to do our own f-cking movies. F-ck that. We’re gonna get all the money,” said Redman.

The Blackout! collaborators are also involved in the cannabis-centered BlazeNow app.

“It’ll tell you all the best dispensaries, all the weak dispensaries in the area,” stated Red.

Raekwon Partners With SubPac For Limited Edition Speaker-Backpack

“Limited Edition” is putting it lightly.

SubPac is a company that creates special backpacks that are meant to immerse people in the sounds that they’re listening to, whether it’s music, gaming or VR video by putting speakers inside of their backpacks. The brand has partnered with Raekwon for a special edition sub bass pack to commemorate his upcoming album The Wild.

Don’t expect it to be easy to grab this limited edition backpack, however. SubPac is only producing 15 of the custom backpacks. They’re making it worthwhile for the select fans who will be receiving the backpacks, although it’s unclear how they’re planning on selecting those fans. SubPac’s co-founder John Alexiou explained via press release that, “the sonic and lyrical impact of Raekwon’s music will be felt throughout the body.”

The Wild releases tomorrow, March 24. You should give it a listen, even if it isn’t with this crazy backpack. Listen to the most recent release from the album, "This Is What It Comes To (Remix)" featuring Ghostface Killah.

Raekwon Taps Ghostface Killah for 'This Is What It Comes Too' Remix: Premiere

In hip-hop history, there are few one-two punches better than the combination of Raekwon and Ghostface Killah, arguably the two most vivid storytellers in the Wu-Tang Clan and two of the most revered MCs of all time. Today, The Chef recruits Ghost for the remix to his single "This Is What It Comes Too," which Billboard premieres below.

The original song serves as the second track from Rae's forthcoming seventh solo album, The Wild, due out March 24 on IceH20/EMPIRE. But for this remix, Ghost comes through with one of his most energetic and devastating verses in some time, while Raekwon holds down hook duty and sandwiches the track with his original verses.

"Ghost is my brother and we’ve been on this blessed journey for a while now," Raekwon said in a statement to Billboard. "Me and Ghost are an institution and I know the fans were calling for a remix, so this is what it comes to: Ironman Lunch Mix."

HANZ ON's Career Comes Full Circle with Final Album ‘BARCA’

Is there any more sobering experience than a brush with death? Just ask Hanz On, the Wu-affiliated Staten Island rapper who premieres his final album, Barca, today on MASS APPEAL. When asked about the potential awkwardness of music that depicts what it’s like to recover from being shot multiple times being used as entertainment, Hanz replied: “It’s a blessing, because it was a time when just staying alive was a task in itself.”

If you think that sounds like someone who’s grounded as fuck, you’d be correct in your estimation. With staunch personal and professional support from Wu-Tang members, including Method Man and Raekwon, Hanz On was able to steady his personal outlook and his career, etching out a reputation as one of New York’s more under-rated talents. “My relationship with the members of the Clan was a major point in my turnaround,” Hanz On says. “Some more than others came out and supported what I was doing once I started doing something positive.. Rae, Dek, Master Killa—they all were very supportive in my transition. When I decided to create my own company in part it was because Meth kind of gave me a different perspective on things. His whole camp (Streetlife, Seven, Nut and Ellis) kind of walked me through it throughout this whole process.”

Barca, he explains, is a full-circle moment. His discography, which is tied to the legend of Hannibal the Great—the title of Hanz’s first album—culminates with this release, titled after Hannibal’s last name. “In short, he accomplished things that would ordinarily be looked at as impossible,” the artist explains. “The homie’s drive was incredible. I’m a big fan.” On tracks like “Big Sky,” featuring Method Man, or “Champion,” you can hear these affirmations shining through. Hanz set out to tell a definitive story with his collection—after a couple listens it’s clear that his discography was always supposed to have a beginning and a definitive end—and on Barca, the lessons he’s learned manifest themselves seamlessly.

You can also it on iTunes/Apple Music, where it’ll be available to stream at midnight.

Method Man Plucked To Play Referee On Battle Rap Show "Drop The Mic"

Wu-Tang Clan pioneer Method Man has been tapped to host a new TBS series, Drop The Mic, a spin-off of James Corden’s Carpool Karaoke. Drop the Mic is already a viral, digital success as an ongoing popular segment on The Late Late Show with James Corden. The newly hatched version enlists entertainers from all over the world to engage in good old-fashioned rap battles, and finds Mr. Meth and model Hailey Baldwin helming the event.

The format pits four celebrities from various segments of the entertainment industry against each other and ultimately only one stands victorious.

Created by Corden, executive producer Ben Winston, Jensen Karp or “Hot Karl” (who wrote Kanye Owes Me $300 and writes many battle raps for The Late Late Show segment) and Ed Thomas, the show officially airs May 2.

SVP of Unscripted Series and Special Event Programming at TBS Michael Bloom spoke on the upcoming series.

“’Drop the Mic’ is a funny, authentic, high-energy series that brings together Hip Hop, comedy and pop culture in a way we’ve never seen before,” he said. “Method, Hailey, James, Ben and their team will make sure our celebrity competitors bring their ‘A’ game to the stage.”

Method Man, of course, is no stranger to being in front of the camera. In addition to his countless music videos with Wu-Tang, Redman and a plethora of others, he’s also appeared on the big screen in movies like How High, Soul Plane, Garden State, Trainwreck with Amy Schumer and Key & Peele’s Keanu.

Raised By Rap Royalty, Infinite Coles Is Finding Success On His Own

The artist on music, sexuality, and growing up in the Wu-Tang house.

The following feature appears in the March 2017 issue of NYLON Guys.

“Everyone wants to be real, but no one knows how to open their eyes,” muses Infinite Coles. Seated in a Brooklyn loft on a brisk winter afternoon, the 23-year-old R&B singer, actor, dancer, and model is contemplative yet cheery as he talks over carrot cake. So, what’s real?

“Love, loyalty, respect,” he replies.

It sounds pretty straightforward, but as Coles’s father—Ghostface Killah of the multiplatinum-selling rap group Wu-Tang Clan—once posed in a song, can it be all so simple? Authenticity has a funny way of becoming complex, considering the pressure to be an individual but still comply with society’s predetermined norms. But for Coles, eschewing conformity and simply being who he is has been the most influential force in his career—even more so than the fact that his dad is one of the greatest rappers of all time.

Coles has always known that he was gay, which was the primary source of angst in his teen years. By that time, Wu-Tang’s legendary debut album, Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers), had been around for a decade, and each member was a star in his own right, with individual albums that garnered street cred and critical acclaim alike. But for Coles, much of the hip-hop collective’s macho dogma was a personal affront.

Method Man & Ghostface’s Collabo With Hanz On Will Leave You Looking Like… (Audio)

Two weeks ago, Wu-Tang Clan affiliate Hanz On dropped “Big Sky,” a big-body record featuring longtime collaborator Method Man. As if that wasn’t enough, today (March 10), the two are back, only this time the one and only Ghostface Killah joins in on the fun.

Premiering at 2DopeBoyz, “Smoke Like We Do” is about getting lifted, and both Killer Bees deliver sky-high bars. “The scientifical mathematical/God made the smoke from the earth, this all natural,” rhymes Tony Starks, who is first up to bat. Highlighting cannabis’ ability to help increase “the wise minds of the scholars” and “increase tax dollars,” Ghost’ touts his as the best around. For his part, Hanz On lists his favorite strains before rapping “Hanz On be smokin’ so much booger, it’s berserk.” Championing “hash from Afghanistan,” Hannibal The Great proves his appetite is interested only in the best the world has to offer.

Mr. Meth closes things up, and unsurprisingly manages to make the topic cerebral and entertaining. “Light a booger, I’m blunted, my suga callin’ me suga/In love with Mary Jane, and I don’t know how to quit her/Done too much frequent flying, now I don’t know where I put her,” he spits. His verse follows a framework that is in some ways similar to Common’s “I Used to Love H.E.R.,” where human qualities are given to an inanimate object/concept. “Back in the days, I used to push her,” he says before signing off with “I’m the plug, candy man with them drugs, I got the hookup.”

“Smoke Like We Do” (which also features wigs) and “Big Sky” will both appear on Hanz On’s forthcoming album BARCA, which arrives March 17 and also features Raekwon, Inspectah Deck, and others.
